What is Max von Laue most famous for?
My most significant contribution, for which I was awarded the Nobel Prize, was the experimental demonstration of the wave nature of X-rays. This was achieved through the observation of diffraction patterns when X-rays passed through a crystal. Prior to this, the nature of X-rays was a subject of considerable debate. By using crystals, which possess a regular atomic lattice acting as a natural diffraction grating, I was able to provide definitive empirical evidence. This work, published in 1912, not only settled the question of X-ray nature but also established the field of X-ray crystallography, opening new avenues for understanding the structure of matter.
