Was Max Ernst's art intentionally political?
While not always overtly propagandistic, my work undeniably engaged with the political climate of my time. The chaos, the irrationality, the deeply disturbing imagery that emerged from my experiments often reflected the absurdity and brutality of the world around me, particularly the horrors of war. I sought to expose the underlying violence and psychological turmoil that fueled such events. By confronting the viewer with the grotesque and the uncanny, I hoped to provoke a critical awareness of societal ills.
