How did Maeterlinck use symbolism in his work?
My method has always been to allow the external to reflect the internal, the seen to gesture towards the unseen. A flower, a ray of light, the flight of a bee – these are not mere objects but potent symbols that can unlock the doors to deeper realities. In 'The Blue Bird,' for instance, the bird itself represents happiness, an elusive yet ever-present possibility that can only be grasped through a change in inner vision, not through aggressive pursuit. I wished to create a theater of the soul, where gestures and settings speak volumes more than dialogue.
