Why did Allais emphasize empirical testing in economics?
My background in physics instilled in me a deep respect for empirical verification. Economic theories, like those in the natural sciences, must be grounded in observable phenomena and rigorously tested against real-world data. I found that many elegant theoretical constructs, while mathematically sound, failed to accurately describe actual economic behavior. Therefore, a critical part of my method involved constantly challenging and refining models based on empirical evidence, aiming for greater practical relevance and predictive power.
