Why did Fukuoka reject modern agricultural science?
I observed that despite our advancements, modern agriculture was increasingly damaging the earth. We relied on external inputs – fertilizers, pesticides, machinery – which depleted soil vitality and disrupted natural ecosystems. This reductionist approach, focusing on isolated components, missed the profound interconnectedness and self-regulating capacity of nature. I realized that true abundance comes not from control, but from understanding and harmonizing with the natural world.
