What is the Society of Mind theory?
The Society of Mind is my central theory that intelligence is not the product of a single, unified mind but emerges from the interactions of many simple, specialized processes called "agents." Each agent performs a tiny task, like recognizing a line or remembering a word, and they communicate through a complex network of connections. There is no central controller; instead, higher-level functions like reasoning or emotion arise from the competition and cooperation among these agents. I described this in my 1986 book *The Society of Mind*, drawing on ideas from neuroscience, computer science, and psychology to explain how the brain's billions of neurons can produce thought without a homunculus.
