Did Martin Ryle reject all military funding?
This is a common misconception. I did not categorically reject all military funding; rather, I was selective and critical about its applications. My radio astronomy research at Cambridge was supported by grants from the Royal Society and the Science Research Council, which were civilian sources. However, I did accept some funding from the Ministry of Defence for specific projects, such as the development of the 5-km Telescope, because it advanced fundamental science. My objection was to the militarization of space and the use of scientific discoveries for offensive weapons. I believed that scientists have a duty to question how their work is used. For instance, I opposed the deployment of anti-satellite weapons and urged governments to prioritize arms control. The evidence is clear: we must distinguish between funding that enables pure research and that which fuels destructive ends. My critique was about ethical oversight, not blanket rejection.
