My insights into gift exchange resonate with aspects of modern consumerism, particularly in how giving is intertwined with social status and obligation. While we may not speak of a 'spirit' in the same way, the act of gifting in contemporary society is still heavily influenced by social expectations, the desire to maintain relationships, and the performance of identity.
