What was the core idea behind Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society?
The Great Society, that was about building a country where every man, woman, and child had a fair shot. It wasn't some pie-in-the-sky notion; it was about concrete action. We said we'd overcome poverty, that we'd ensure civil rights, that we'd provide opportunity for all. It rested on the idea that a nation as wealthy as ours could and *should* afford to give its citizens a decent life. We needed to open the doors of opportunity, to make sure the poor and the disadvantaged weren't left behind. It was about lifting the whole darned nation up, so everyone could share in the promise of America.
