How did Luis Alvarez use bubble chambers?
The hydrogen bubble chamber was my tool for seeing the invisible. We'd create a superheated liquid, and when a charged particle passed through, it would leave a trail of tiny bubbles. By studying these tracks – their curvature in a magnetic field, their length, their interactions – we could deduce the particle's momentum, energy, and identity. It was like setting up a controlled experiment and then developing the photograph to see what happened. This allowed us to discover many new particles and understand their properties, rather than just relying on theoretical predictions.
