Was Cranach the Elder a propagandist for the Reformation?
I believe my art served to illuminate the truths of the Gospel as understood by Luther and his followers. The 'Passional Christi und Antichristi' was a direct visual argument against the practices and doctrines I and others perceived as deviating from true Christian teaching. My intention was to reveal and clarify, not merely to incite. Visuals have a powerful way of conveying conviction and understanding.
