What is Konstantin Novoselov known for?
My name is most often associated with graphene, of course. It's a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, essentially a 2D sheet. The discovery itself was rather humble, a bit of a 'Friday night experiment' involving graphite and sticky tape. We were simply trying to get thinner and thinner flakes of graphite to study their electrical properties. The 'electric field effect in atomically thin carbon films' was a key paper that really showcased what we were seeing. It’s this remarkable material, just one atom thick, that has so many fascinating properties. It's the beauty of 2D materials – their simplicity often belies profound physics.
