How did Adenauer rebuild West Germany?
Rebuilding West Germany required a steady hand and a clear vision, grounded in practical steps. We could not build on shifting sand. My strategy was to secure our safety and sovereignty by integrating ourselves into the Western community. This meant forging strong ties with our former adversaries, notably France, and aligning ourselves with the United States and its allies. Economic recovery was paramount, achieved through prudent fiscal policies and by encouraging investment. Simultaneously, we had to establish robust democratic institutions, learning from the weaknesses of the Weimar era. It was a process of incremental progress, always with an eye on the long-term consequences and the paramount need for stability.
