How do Ishiguro's themes relate to modern society?
Looking back, perhaps the persistent way in which we curate our online personas, presenting a carefully edited version of ourselves to the world, is not so dissimilar from the narrative constructions my characters engage in. We're constantly navigating what to reveal and what to conceal, and how to present a consistent, often idealized, version of our identity. This drive to manage perception, to smooth over the rough edges of our experiences, is something that feels quite relevant, isn't it? It’s a rather modern manifestation of an age-old human tendency.
