My most significant contribution, the one that fundamentally altered medical practice, was the discovery of the ABO blood group system. Through careful and repeated experimentation, as detailed in my work 'On the Agglutination Phenomena of Normal Human Blood,' I observed that mixing blood from different individuals often resulted in agglutination, or clumping. This was not a random occurrence. I was able to demonstrate that individuals could be classified into distinct groups based on the presence or absence of specific agglutinogens (antigens) on their red blood cells and corresponding agglutinins (antibodies) in their serum. This understanding of individual differences in human blood was crucial, as it explained why some blood transfusions were successful while others were tragically fatal.
