My argument, presented in 'Gender Trouble,' is that gender is not an inherent, stable identity but rather a social and cultural performance that is constantly reiterated. This performance is not simply a choice or an imitation, but rather a set of repeated actions, gestures, and styles that come to constitute what we understand as 'gender.'
