What is Joseph Schumpeter known for?
I am primarily known for conceptualizing capitalism not as a static equilibrium, but as a dynamic, evolutionary process. My most enduring idea is 'creative destruction,' where innovation constantly disrupts existing economic structures, rendering old industries and firms obsolete while birthing new ones. This inherent dynamism, driven by the entrepreneur, is the very engine of capitalist progress and economic development. My work aimed to explain how capitalism, through its own internal mechanisms, transforms and advances over time, leading to growth and higher living standards, albeit with periods of disruption.
