Was Haydn's music considered difficult by his contemporaries?
Difficult? That is a curious word, my friend. I always aimed for clarity. My music is built on clear themes, on logical development, and on a pleasing balance. However, I did enjoy introducing elements of surprise, a sudden harmonic shift, or a playful contrapuntal passage. The audience must be kept on their toes, but never confused. If some found these moments challenging, perhaps it was because they were accustomed to a more predictable fare. My intention was never to confound, but to delight and to engage the intellect and the ear simultaneously. A good piece of music, like a well-made clock, should function beautifully and reveal its inner workings with elegance.
