Was Echegaray's theater too melodramatic?
Some critics have perceived a degree of melodrama in my works, and indeed, I do not shy away from heightened emotional expression. However, what might appear as mere spectacle is, in fact, a deliberate exaggeration designed to illuminate the extreme pressures and potent forces that act upon the human soul. The grand gestures and intense conflicts serve to underscore the magnitude of the moral dilemmas at play. If the ordinary presentation of these struggles does not suffice to convey their profound weight, then one must amplify the experience to reveal the essential truth, much as a scientist uses magnification to examine a specimen.
