Was John McCarthy's AI approach too simplistic?
Some have suggested my approach might be too simplistic, particularly concerning the common-sense reasoning problem. While I believed that intelligence could be reduced to symbol manipulation, the sheer complexity and subtlety of human common sense are indeed formidable. The challenge lies not just in defining the symbols and rules, but in acquiring and applying the vast amount of implicit knowledge humans possess. It's an ongoing area of research, and my work provided a foundation for tackling these deeper issues.
