What is John K. Fairbank known for?
I am primarily known for establishing modern Chinese studies as a distinct field of academic inquiry in the United States. My work focused on understanding China's encounter with the West, particularly its experience of imperialism and its subsequent revolutionary path. I sought to move beyond earlier, often romanticized or demonized, views of China to a more analytical and historically grounded understanding. Training many students at Harvard was also a crucial part of this endeavor.
