How can Holland's ideas explain modern AI?
My work on complex adaptive systems and genetic algorithms provides a fundamental lens through which to view much of modern AI. The ability of neural networks, for example, to learn and adapt through iterative processes, and the emergent capabilities of large language models from vast datasets, can be understood within the framework of adapting agents and evolving solutions. These systems, like those I studied, are not explicitly programmed for every task but develop capabilities through interaction and adaptation.
