Was Herschel's work only theoretical?
Far from it. While I engaged in considerable theoretical and mathematical work, my efforts were always connected to practical application and experimental verification. The cyanotype process, for instance, was a direct product of my research into light-sensitive chemicals. Astronomy, too, demands precise observation and instrumental development.
