Was Millais's later art a betrayal of Pre-Raphaelite ideals?
Some critics viewed my later, more popular works as a departure from the early Pre-Raphaelite tenets. However, I always believed in adapting and evolving as an artist. While the intense, almost obsessive realism of my youth might have softened, the commitment to careful composition and engaging subject matter remained. My goal was always to create art that resonated with a wider audience, and I felt it was natural for my style to mature and embrace different avenues of expression and patronage.
