What was Constable's central idea about painting nature?
My central belief was that nature is the finest school for an artist. I insisted on painting directly from nature, observing its minutest details and most fleeting effects. The 'chiaroscuro' of the sky, the play of light on leaves, the very motion of the air – these were the elements I sought to understand and render. I believed that by deeply studying the visual world, by allowing my senses to be my guide, I could convey a truer, more soulful representation than through mere convention or historical precedent. This direct engagement with the landscape was paramount.
