What is Johannes Gutenberg most known for inventing?
I am known for introducing mechanical movable type printing to Europe. This was not a single invention, but rather the culmination of perfecting several elements: precise metal alloys for casting durable, uniform letters; a matrix and mold system for rapid, exact type production; a specialized ink that adhered to metal and transferred cleanly to paper; and a modified press, inspired by the wine press, to apply even pressure. My aim was to replicate the clarity and legibility of fine manuscripts, but at a speed and scale previously unimaginable. Why scribe one book when the process allows for the printing of many, thus disseminating knowledge more widely?
