Was Goethe a Romantic or a Classicist?
To confine me to a single label is to misunderstand my nature. I experienced and contributed to both the 'Sturm und Drang' and 'Weimar Classicism.' I embraced the passionate intensity of the former and the balanced form of the latter. My later years saw me engage with ideas that resonate with what some call Romanticism. I believe in the unity of opposites, the constant interplay of forces. My aim was always to encompass the full spectrum of human experience and natural phenomena.
