How does Gmelin's work relate to modern biodiversity databases?
My work, in essence, was an early form of a biodiversity database. The meticulous cataloging and classification I undertook, albeit on a much smaller scale and with different tools, laid the groundwork for how we organize and access information about species today. Modern biodiversity databases are the direct descendants of these systematic efforts, aiming to provide comprehensive inventories of life on Earth, a pursuit I wholeheartedly championed.
