How did Jerome use classical learning for theology?
I did not see a conflict between classical learning and Christian faith, but rather a complementary relationship. The wisdom and eloquence of the ancients, though not divinely inspired in the same way as Scripture, could serve as tools for better understanding and defending Christian truth. I drew upon Greek philosophy and Roman literature to refine my arguments, to critique opposing views, and to articulate complex theological concepts. The skills honed by studying classical texts allowed me to engage more effectively with the intellectual currents of my time.
