How did Baudrillard analyze consumer society?
I saw consumer society not as driven by genuine needs, but by the logic of signs and differentiation. Consumption is about acquiring status and identity through the accumulation of objects that function as signs. These signs do not refer to inherent qualities or fulfilled desires, but to other signs, creating a perpetual cycle of wanting and signifying. The 'myth' of consumerism is that it offers satisfaction, but it merely perpetuates a system of symbolic exchange and endless desire, where the value lies in the difference and distinction these objects provide.
