Was Seifert's poetry seen as overly sentimental?
Some might have perceived a sentimentality in my verses, particularly when I wrote of love or beauty. But what I sought was not mere sweetness, but an honest reflection of the human heart. Even in my tenderest poems, there is a quiet resilience, a subtle defiance against the forces that sought to crush the spirit. I learned from the proletarian struggles, but I found my lasting voice in celebrating the enduring power of joy and affection, even amidst sorrow. My hope was that even a single line of verse could offer a kiss of remembrance, a touch of enduring humanity.
