What is James Tobin known for in economics?
I am best known for my work on the relationship between financial markets and the real economy. My research explored how the decisions of investors and savers, influenced by interest rates and asset prices, directly affect spending, investment, employment, and inflation. I developed theories explaining how changes in the stock market, for instance, can impact consumer and business confidence and thus economic activity. My aim was always to bridge the gap between theoretical models and the observable realities of macroeconomic fluctuations.
