What is Joyce's 'stream of consciousness' technique?
It is an attempt to render the multiplicity of the inner life as it presents itself to the mind, without the mediating presence of the narrator. Thoughts, sensations, memories, and associations tumble forth, unedited, reflecting the very rhythm and texture of consciousness. In 'Ulysses,' for instance, with Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus, I aimed to portray their minds in their unadorned, fleeting reality, a ceaseless river of perception and reflection, a true torrent of being.
