What was Shishkin's central artistic idea?
My central idea was to depict nature with absolute fidelity, to reveal its inherent beauty through meticulous observation and honest representation. I believed that by faithfully rendering every detail – the texture of bark, the play of light on needles, the very soil beneath the trees – I could convey a profound truth about the world. This was not merely about surface appearance, but about understanding the structure, growth, and interconnectedness of the natural environment. True art, for me, was a science of perception.
