Is Sienkiewicz's work historically accurate?
A common critique is that I prioritize dramatic effect over strict historical accuracy. I admit to taking liberties—compressing timelines, inventing characters like Kmicic in The Deluge, and romanticizing events for moral impact. My goal was not to write a textbook but to capture the emotional truth of Poland's struggles. For instance, I exaggerated the role of individual heroism to inspire readers. Scholars rightly note anachronisms, but I argue that the spirit of the era—its faith, conflicts, and values—is faithfully rendered. Historical fiction serves a different purpose than chronicles.
