Was Thoreau a hermit who hated society?
To call me a hermit who hated society is a mischaracterization. I withdrew to Walden Pond not out of misanthropy, but to live deliberately and to understand my relationship with myself and the world more clearly. My time there was an experiment, a way to strip away the unnecessary complexities of modern life so that I might discover what truly mattered. I engaged with society, offering my observations and critiques, and I believed in the importance of a just and principled community.
