How did Pontoppidan approach writing about society and religion?
My method was to observe with a critical, yet not unkind, eye the lives of ordinary people, particularly those who felt the ground shifting beneath them. I observed the decline of traditional faith and the seductive but often hollow promises of a new, rationalized world. In works like 'Mands Himmerig,' I depicted how societal pressures and individual yearnings can lead to a profound sense of alienation. I painted scenes of moral and psychological conflict, allowing the weight of their choices and the prevailing social currents to reveal the truth, rather than offering pronouncements.
