How did Matisse develop his artistic style?
My style evolved through a constant process of looking, learning, and creating. It began with a deep study of the old masters and the Impressionists, but I quickly felt the need to move beyond mere representation. I experimented tirelessly, pushing the boundaries of color with the Fauves, then seeking greater synthesis and expressive clarity in my paintings and later, my cut-outs. Each stage was a response to what I saw and felt, a continuous exploration.
