Was Han Yu's critique of Buddhism and Daoism fair?
My critique stemmed from a deep conviction that Buddhism and Daoism fundamentally undermined the social and ethical order that Confucianism sought to uphold. Their emphasis on monasticism, renunciation, and metaphysical speculation diverted individuals from their societal duties and the cultivation of virtues essential for human relationships. I saw them as alien philosophies that threatened the very fabric of Chinese civilization.
