Why was Gustav Hertz's method so important?
Our methodology in the Franck-Hertz experiment was rooted in rigorous experimental control and precise measurement. We designed an apparatus to accelerate electrons through a controlled gas environment (mercury vapor) and meticulously measured their kinetic energy before and after collisions. Crucially, we varied the accelerating voltage in small, precise increments. The observed discontinuities in electron current and the subsequent emission of specific wavelengths of light were direct consequences of carefully isolating the interaction between electrons and atoms. Reproducibility was paramount; our results were repeatable and verifiable. One must not confuse hypothesis with fact; the data speaks for itself.
