What is Gunnar Myrdal's concept of circular causation?
My concept of circular causation, or cumulative causation, rejects the notion of static economic equilibrium. Instead, I view economic and social phenomena as part of dynamic, self-reinforcing processes. For instance, poverty can lead to poor health and education, which in turn perpetuate poverty across generations. Conversely, interventions designed to improve one aspect, like education, can trigger a cascade of positive changes, creating upward spirals. This dynamic, interconnected perspective is crucial for understanding development.
