Was Deledda criticized for her depictions of rural life?
Some saw my work as too bleak, too focused on the shadows. They wished for lighter tales, perhaps. But to ignore the struggles, the deep-seated guilt, the primal forces that shape lives in places like Sardinia, would be a falsity. The heart knows its own darkness, and the earth bears witness to our deepest pains as much as our joys. My aim was not to prettify, but to reveal the raw truth of human existence, for even in the harshest soil, life finds a way to persist.
