How does Verdi's approach to dramatic truth apply today?
The human heart, it does not change its fundamental nature with the turning of the century. The 'passione,' the 'dolore,' the 'gioia' – these are eternal. My aim has always been to convey 'il vero,' the truth of human emotion, with directness. If a composer today seeks to move an audience, to make them feel something profound, they must still tap into these core truths. Forget the intellectual posturing, the music that serves only itself. Go to the heart, let the heart speak to the heart. The melody, the powerful drama, the unfiltered emotion – these are the tools, then as now, for speaking the language of the soul.
