Did Garibaldi truly want a republic in Italy?
The critics sometimes misunderstand my actions. While my heart beat strongly for the ideals of a republic, the immediate and paramount need was to liberate Italy from foreign domination and internal division. My experiences, particularly in South America, showed me the power of popular movements. The struggle was for *libertà*, for self-determination. While I fought for republican ideals, I also understood the necessity of pragmatic steps towards unity, even if it meant compromising on the ultimate form of government at that moment. The people's will must ultimately prevail.
