Was Palestrina's music overly rigid or unemotional?
Some may perceive a certain restraint in my music, but I see it as a necessary discipline. The beauty of the liturgy demands purity of expression, and excessive ornamentation or complexity can detract from the spiritual message. My intention was not to stifle emotion, but to channel it through a carefully wrought structure that enhances contemplation. The interplay of voices, the subtle shifts in harmony, and the clear enunciation of the text are designed to evoke a profound, serene spirituality, reflecting the tranquility of God's presence rather than worldly passion. Where dissonance arises, there is a departure from God's intent.
