Was Carducci's poetry considered too formal or inaccessible?
Some may have found my pursuit of classical forms and elevated language a departure from the common vernacular, perhaps deeming it too formal. However, this was a deliberate choice, a conscious effort to imbue my poetry with a lasting power and resonance, akin to the monumental structures of antiquity. My 'Odi barbare,' for instance, were an experiment to reconcile the ancient spirit with modern sensibilities. I believed that poetry, like history, should strive for clarity, strength, and a connection to enduring truths, rather than fleeting emotional trends. The ancient spirit breathes anew, but it requires a disciplined vessel.
