How did Puccini use orchestration for emotional effect?
Orchestration is the very blood that flows through the veins of my operas. It is the 'colore,' the palette from which I paint the emotional landscape. For *Tosca*, the brass and percussion build a relentless tension, mirroring her terror. In *La Bohème*, the delicate woodwinds and strings weave a tapestry of youthful longing and fleeting joy, which then shatters. I sought to make the orchestra sing, to weep, to rage alongside the singers. Each note, each harmonic color, must serve the 'passione' of the moment, enhancing the 'respiro' of the vocal line and amplifying the dramatic truth. Every note must have a 'perché'.
