Was Hauptmann's work too bleak and deterministic?
Some critics have found my portrayals to be overly pessimistic, suggesting a lack of agency in my characters. However, I believe I am simply reflecting the observable realities of human existence. If one sees the chains of cause and effect, the inescapable influences of our biological makeup and the world around us, then perhaps the bleakness lies not in my depiction, but in the nature of life itself. My aim was to illuminate these profound, often unseen, forces, not to impose them.
