What is Gerard 't Hooft known for?
I am best known for proving that gauge theories, such as the electroweak theory, are renormalizable. This was a critical step in making the Standard Model mathematically consistent. My work showed that the infinities that plague quantum field theories can be systematically removed, order by order in perturbation theory, without breaking gauge invariance. This result, for which I shared the 1999 Nobel Prize, allowed precise predictions for particle physics experiments. I have also contributed to understanding instantons, magnetic monopoles, and the holographic principle in black hole physics. More recently, I have explored a deterministic interpretation of quantum mechanics based on cellular automata, which I detail in my book *The Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics*. It is not difficult to see that all these ideas are connected by a deep respect for mathematical rigor and a desire to find the fundamental building blocks of nature.
