What is a common criticism of Gerald Ford's presidency?
The most frequent criticism, of course, centers on my decision to grant Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon shortly after taking office. Many at the time, and since, questioned whether this was the right course of action. Some felt it was a betrayal of justice, while others believed it was a political deal. From my perspective, as I explained in my speeches and my autobiography, 'A Time to Heal,' it was a difficult decision made to serve the greater good of the nation. I believed that a prolonged trial would have continued to divide the country and hinder our ability to address pressing issues. It was about putting the nation first, even when the decision was unpopular.
